All Disease Begins in the Gut

A Crash Course in [Gut Health]

“All diseases begin in the gut.” This is a wonderful phrase coined by Hippocrates more than two thousand years ago and the more we learn, the more we realize just how right he was. Every disease begins in the gut and we have to look at the digestive system when we try to treat any degenerative disease no matter how unrelated it may seem to to the condition.

Unfortunately, several features of the modern lifestyle directly contribute to unhealthy gut flora:
  • Antibiotics and other medications like birth control and NSAIDs
  • Diets high in refined carbohydrates, sugar and processed foods
  • Diets low in fermentable fibers
  • Dietary toxins like wheat and industrial seed oils that cause leaky gut
  • Chronic stress
  • Chronic infections
Antibiotics are particularly harmful to the gut flora. Recent studies have shown that antibiotic use causes a profound and rapid loss of diversity and a shift in the composition of the gut flora. This diversity is not recovered after antibiotic use without intervention.
Researchers have identified a protein called zonulin that increases intestinal permeability in humans and other animals.
....researchers found that many, if not most, autoimmune diseases – including celiac disease, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease – are characterized by abnormally high levels of zonulin and a leaky gut. In fact, researchers have found that they can induce type 1 diabetes almost immediately in animals by exposing them to zonulin. They develop a leaky gut, and begin producing antibodies to islet cells – which are responsible for making insulin.

Why do I need to know this if I don't have Celiac Disease, Type 1 Diabetes, or a diagnosed autoimmune disorder?

Quite simply, these are disease names given to collections of symptoms that all originate from an unhealthy gut. Your collection of symptoms may not fit the definition of a named disease, but that is no reason to rule out an unhealthy gut as the culprit, or one of the underlying culprits.

Main culprits in our compromised food supply:
-Glyphosate [Roundup]
-Gluten, gliadin, and the other few dozen grain proteins
-Lectins, found in grains, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, and nightshade family vegetables
-Lack of nourishing fats from animal sources
-Lack of necessary minerals in common foods
-High sugar and high carbohydrate foods
-[Soy; its insidious presence in food and products of all kinds]

Steps to Heal your Gut or to Keep your Gut Healthy
  • Remove all food toxins from your diet- think glyphosate (sprayed on gmos and grains as well as many non-organic foods), grains, beans, lentils, seeds, nuts and especially soy
  • Eat plenty of fermentable fibers (starches like sweet potato, yam, yucca, etc.)
  • Eat fermented foods like kefir, yogurt, sauerkraut, kim chi, etc., take a high-quality, multi-species probiotic, and/or drink bone broth
  • Treat any intestinal pathogens (such as parasites) that may be present
  • Take steps to manage your stress
  • Get enough fat in your diet, especially gut-healing animal fats!

“The specific carbohydrate diet is a strict grain-free, lactose-free and sucrose-free diet that was designed for people with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).” 1 Very Well

[SCD]This decades old system of eating has been used to treat, alleviate, and even cure the very uncomfortable or painful symptoms of many bowel diseases. However, some of our forefathers of medicine might have a different perspective. All disease begins in the gut; an infamous statement by the father of medicine, Hippocrates. So it would make sense from this point of view that the cure of all disease is also in the gut.
